The cities of Vienna, Austria, and Frankfurt, Germany, both lay claims as the birthplace of hot dogs. Where they developed first is a matter of debate. According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, Frankfurt celebrates the founding of the little sausages as 1487.

Wherever they originated, they made their way to the United States are now quite popular. The NHDSC states Americans will eat 150 million hot dogs on Independence Day.
